Over the 14 year time span from 1992 through 2006, there have been 248,074 reported cases of this disease and a stunning count of 182,466 disclosed cases over the 6 year time span from 2007 through 2013. When these numbers are compared and the intervals in which they occur in, one can notice an increasing trend in the disease. The reason for this spike in numbers can not be specifically pinpointed, but can be tracked to where the specific reported cases were when they contracted the disease from the pesky ticks carrying the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. So, if you plan on venturing into heavily wooded areas, make sure you consistently check yourself and your peers for ticks.
